Two Local Judges in Contention for Utah Supreme Court

Judges currently presiding in Summit County's Third District court and Wasatch County's Fourth District Court are two   of seven nominees for a vacancy on Utah's Supreme Court.

The open seat on the Supreme Court is for Justice Christine Durham, who will retire as of November 16th.

A Judicial Nominating Commission has picked seven nominees, including local Judges  Paige Petersen, who serves as the Silver Creek Justice Center and Fourth District Court Judge Derek Pullan, who works in Wasatch County.

The other contenders are Christopher Ballard, an assistant solicitor general in the Utah Attorney General's office; two judges from the state Court of Appeals,  Michele Christiansen and Jill Pohlmann; an attorney for Salt Lake City, Margaret Plane; and a private attorney, Terry Welch.

The appointment by Governor Gary Herbert is subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.
