Vail Resorts Will Take Over Canyons Resort Operations
Vail Resorts today announced it will be assuming the operations of Canyons Resort. In a press release, Vail Resorts reports it has a lease with the owner of Canyons, Talisker Mountain, in which Vail Resorts assumes all of the resort operations at Canyons, while Talisker will retain all of the development rights for the 4-million square feet of real estate.
A press conference is scheduled later today with Rob Katz the chairman and CEO of Vail Resorts. In a prepared statement, Katz says Canyons is a perfect complement to Vail’s collection of world-class mountain resorts. Noting that Canyons is in the top 10 of North American resorts by SKI magazine readers, he says he looks forward to building on that momentum.
The lease has an initial term of 50 years with six 50-year renewal options. The lease provides for $25 million in annual fixed payments, which increase each year by an inflation linked index.
In 2007, Vail Resorts was involved in a bidding war with Talisker CEO Jack Bistricier to purchase the resort from American Skiing Company. Vail went to court for a preliminary injunction to try and block the sale but lost.
KPCW has been unable to contact Canyons spokesmen for comment. KPCW will bring you more following today’s press conference.
