It’s time for Park City High School’s Mr. Miner Pageant. KPCW’s Melissa Allison has more.
Park City High School has 245 seniors this year and nine of those students are contestants in their annual Mr. Miner Pageant at the Eccles Center.
The pageant has been running more than 10 years. Dance Director Ashley Mott said the contestants were nominated by their peers and everyone has gotten involved.
“The Miner men, the dance company girls, the stage crew kids, the art students designed the poster but I think it’s definitely the ticket price for the entertainment value," Mott said. "For like $6 it’s an amazing show. It’s funny, it’s entertaining, it’s a high-level professional production. It’s not your average little talent show so I would just encourage people to come out and support.”
In the past the event has raised an average of $1,700. with all of the proceeds benefiting the dance company and dance program at the high school. This year they’re shooting for $2,ooo.
Even though the event is a spoof on Miss America Pageants, Mott said all of the contestants are pampered throughout the process. The real prize is plenty of food and a good time.
“The Mr. Miner helmet in our beauty pageant is a helmet, like a mining helmet, that the dance company girls have bedazzled with rhinestones and glitter – making it look kind of like a beauty pageant tiara," Mott said. " They get a sash that says, 'Mr. Miner' on it and then all of the contestants get a t-shirt that says, 'Mr. Miner 2017' on the back. We give them dinners and we just try and support them.”
The pageant takes place Wednesday at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from dance company members or the contestants for $6 in advance. Tickets at the door are $8.
