Fire Returns To Rockport Area

Lynn Ware Peek.

Information compiled from on-air reports.

UPDATE 10:30 PM

The Rockport Estates evacuation order has been lifted. Residents can now safely return to their homes.

As of 8:00 p.m. tonight, the Rockport Estates fire has burned over 120 acres and is 45 percent contained.

UPDATE 6:30 PM

The structure where the fire is believed to have started has been updated as a yurt, not a single family house.

County  and Sheriff spokespeople hope to lift the evacuation ban on homeowners by 11 PM tonight. Deputies went house-to-house to ask residents to leave. Most did, although a "handful" decided to stay in their homes, Capt. Justin Martinez said.

The state has taken the lead in fire fighting efforts.

SR 32 continues to be closed between Rockport Dam in Wanship and Brown's Canyon Road.

FRIDAY, JULY 25, 2014 5:43 PM

A new fire in the Rockport Estates area started this afternoon, almost one year after a lightening strike burned 14 structures.

At 5:20 PM, officials told KPCW over the air that 75 acres were burning and there was zero containment.

The origin of the fire was determined to be at a home under construction, said Summit County Sheriff Office Captain Justin Martinez. Four structures total are counted as lost.

Reporter Lynn Ware Peek reported that the fire started south and east of last year's burn, and Martinez confirmed the fire seemed to be heading east. No structures are currently in its path.

Despite this, Summit County has ordered a mandatory evacuation of the Rockport Estates neighborhood.

All three Summit County fire districts are out battling the fire. A C130 Hercules plane is also currently employed to disperse fire retardant and a sky crane (helicopter) is scooping water out of the nearby reservoir.

State Road 32 has been closed from I-80 to SR 196.
