Don't Let the Christian Center's Fence Fool You

Christian Center of Park City
Though there's a fence - the Christian Center is still taking donations.

There have been a lot of questions about the fence that was raised around the Christian Center of Park City but executive director Rob Harter said not to worry - it’s a good thing.

“We are approaching construction and we’ve got some exciting things going on where we’re going to be, in a sense, doubling our space," Harter said. "We’re just in the process where, before you can do any construction you have to put a fence up. That’s the first step you have to do before a construction project.”

The plans are to increase space by remodeling the current facility as well as building a new structure to the north.

“So what we’re going to do is expand our programs and services," Harter said. "We’re going to have an expanded food pantry; we’re going to have an expanded counseling center. We’ll actually have what we’re calling a community center slash cultural center, perhaps a Latino cultural center; we’re talking to the city on that. So the ability to have more space we can spread out cause right now, you’ve been to the Christian Center, we’re just kind of climbing on over each other – there’s boxes that are barely fitting in have to have offsite storage because we have so much stuff that comes through every day which is great on the one hand but we’ve run out of space.”

Building plans haven’t been finalized, but they’re looking at adding three to four thousand square feet.

“There’s a lot of transition," Harter said. "So we’re already saying, ‘Please, have some patience with us now.’ Because what’s going to happen is this - we’re moving our boutique, our Center Stage Boutique which is on the main level,   we’re moving that into what used to be Riffs – the guitar shop right across from Windy Ridge Café. So we’re going to move this weekend and so next Wednesday we’ll be open for business so that will be our new boutique location. In the process, we’ll move the thrift and the food pantry upstairs where the boutique is now and that way they can start working on construction in the lower basement level, if you will.”

The center is currently open but will close on Friday to move the boutique. Everything will open again on Monday with the boutique at the Riffs Guitar location opening on Wednesday.

Parking is currently available inside the fenced area but Harter said they’ll be updating their Facebook and website with direction as things change. As for people who drop off donations – he said they’re going to come up with a better plan.

“We’re gonna come up with a system to make it, hopefully even easier where they just come in, you don’t even get out of your car," Harter said. "You just come, we’ll come up to your car and unload your car and then you can just drive on and move on and you don’t have to park and unload, that’s our goal.”

Only half of the $7.3 million for the construction has been raised. Harter said they’re currently in a private phase of fundraising but will soon open it up to the public.
