The Park City Institute’s Big Stars, Bright Nights Concert Series rolls on with a performance on Monday evening from Chris Blue.
Chris Blue won season 12 of The Voice, a television singing competition on NBC, but Blue got his start at three-years-old singing with his family in churches in the South.
“We were in church. My family had a singing group, very similar to the Jackson 5. I wanted to sing with my brothers and my mom, and I wanted to be one of the guys, but I was always too small.” Blue said, “One day my mom, who was the Joe Jackson of our family, allowed me to come out and sing two lines of a song. When she saw the reaction of the people, she was like ‘woah wait a minute, I think we’ve got something here’. From then on I began singing with my brothers in churches and different events all over the southeast region of the United States.”
Blue got his big break when he won season 12 of The Voice in 2017. His first song on the show was a cover of “The Tracks of My Tears”. He admits he wasn’t very familiar with the song.
“Funny story about tracks of my tears, I had never performed the song before I sang it on the show. That was the first time I had ever performed that song. Actually, was the first time I had ever really heard of the song, was on the show.” Blue said, “It just goes to show that you never know what works and what doesn’t work until you try it. I’ve just always been a believer of putting who I am into whatever I’m doing. Fortunately, I was able to sing the song and it moved the people.”
Blue’s website says he artfully unites Motown, pop and soul into a sound of his own. Blue says he doesn’t have a ‘favorite’ music genre to perform.
“Ya know what’s funny? It’s not even about the music with me as much as it is the feeling. I enjoy giving people an experience that they’ll never forget, that’s what I really enjoy. I don’t mean to sound like ‘ah come on dude that’s a safe answer’. It’s honestly the truth.” Blue continues, “I love all types of music, but what I love more than the music is the way the music makes me feel and the way it makes people feel. That’s really what I try to go after.”
Although Blue enjoys his tremendous success, he looks forward to making music with his family once again.
“My schedule doesn’t permit me to sing with them at the moment.” Blue says, “Family is forever, its kind of one of my mottos and my slogans. At some point, we’ll get back on stage together when the time is right and make music like we used to.”
